The New York Milk Bank:: Give. Nourish. Thrive.

“Did you know that more than one in ten babies is born prematurely in New York State?  But did you also know that premature infants fed an exclusive diet of breast milk have fewer complications and improved long term health outcomes versus those that are fed formula?
Unfortunately, not all premature infants are able to receive their own mothers’ milk, often due to medical complications.  The next best alternative is pasteurized donor human milk (PDHM), and there are currently 15 nonprofit human milk banks in the US.  However, there are currently no milk banks operating in the state of New York!

To meet this need, a passionate group of doctors and lactation consultants has teamed up to develop the first fully operational donor human milk in our state – The New York Milk Bank, Inc.  We are a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the health and survival of infants in need by providing them with safely pasteurized donor human milk when their mothers’ own milk is unavailable or insufficient.

Our goal is to collect as much milk as possible from carefully screened donors who have a surplus, pasteurize it to kill any viruses and bacteria, and redistribute it to hospitals across New York State – enabling at-risk infants in New York to receive as much human milk as they need.

We are in the planning stages and need help fundraising and recruiting eligible milk donors. We already have several milk drop-off locations across the state and plan to open our processing facility by Mother’s Day 2016.

If you know anyone who may be interested in providing financial support for this endeavor, or are interested in donating milk or volunteering your time, please visit our website: www.nymilkbank.org.  You may also find out how to receive donor milk for an infant in need.

Together we can give New York infants exactly what they need to thrive!”
