Eating Pollution

Terry Winckler asserts that the Gulf spill area is like a cauldron waiting to be stirred. He is right, but wait. There is more:

The world is bleeding. Open, raw, vulnerable, she aches against a savage wound. But the savage wound is one of many. All the food, water, air, and earth we share has been made just a little more toxic this month. One writer thinks the BP spill will result in poisonous fallout across vast areas of the country. A Mother Jones article also warns of hurricane-pushed toxics, even as it discusses the invisible health effects from all the spill chemicals.

We know from Louisiana Health Department reports that at least 162 people have been harmed, and some hospitalized, by exposure to the oil/dispersant toxics. We also know that air pollution levels in that vast area of spilled oil are loaded with toxic chemicals linked to the spill and are at concentrations higher than routinely measured in such pollution-saturated cities as Mexico City and Los Angeles. More ominous for creatures that make up the Gulf ecosystem are impacts being assessed by marine toxicologist Susan Shaw. In an interview with OnEarth, she described, among other things, the deadly nature of those vast oil plumes created by the interaction of dispersants and oil.

I’m just sharing information: Go Veg.com says….Many leading environmental organizations, such as the National Audubon Society and the Sierra Club, are now establishing the link between eating meat and eco-disasters like climate change. According to Environmental Defense, if every American skipped one meal of chicken per week and substituted vegetarian foods instead, the carbon dioxide savings would be the same as taking more than a half-million cars off U.S. roads.

Eating 1 lb. of meat emits the same amount of greenhouse gasses as driving an SUV 40 miles.Environmental organizations aren’t the only ones making the connection. PETA has worked with many celebrities, such as Sir Paul McCartney and Chrissie Hynde, to help raise awareness about the undeniable link between eating meat and environmental devastation. To read Sir Paul McCartney’s interview about the environmental crisis, visit PETA’s blog The PETA Files.

Also, I guess I’d just like to add my two points. We need to get GREENER FASTER. We need to pull every resource towards a radical shift away from everything we’ve done before. Sure, it might be messy. But, it won’t be messier than what’s going on in the gulf right now. And, when I see a sad CNN story with someone speaking about sea food safety, I wanna run and cry. Who are you kidding? We ARE the colitis, cancer, SLE, autoimmune diseased nation. Must . Have . Help . Fast . The kids are on their way home from summer camp and tonight, all around the world, we’re eating pollution for dinner.
